IN MEMORIAM

Tom Karpan

As it must to all Men , Death came to Tom Karpan on June 20, 1973. All who knew Tom are deeply grieved and our sympathy is extended to his devoted wife, Marie, to the Mother he adored, as well as to his sorrowing Brothers and Sisters.

I had the great honor and privilege of knowing Tom for twenty-five years--of which twenty-one of those years were spent at Kawaga. Tom started as a counselor, then Head of the Waterfront, and for fifteen years was our Head Counselor. Working so closely with Tom over the years I knew him intimately and entirely.

Only Tom's body has been put to rest, for his memory will ever burn brightly in the hearts of We of Kawaga, who knew him, loved him, and respected him. Tom was always ready to lend a helping hand, and was understanding of all from the youngest Chip to the oldest Oneida, and to the Staff in general. He was at all times sympathetic, patient, and had the highest sense of fairness.

Tom had a great love for Kawaga and the Kawaga Nation. In every letter I received from him over the years he always ended with: "Give my best to all the Braves of the Kawaga Nation."

We'll miss your physical presence Tom--but the memories of you will forever remain deeply inscribed in our hearts. You were a MAN in the finest sense--and our memories of you are treasured ones. The words of the prophet Micah, I feel most fittingly apply to Tom. "What Doth The Lord require of Thee? To Do Justice, To Love Mercy, and to Walk Humbly with Thy God."

Rest peacefully, Tom--all of us have heavy hearts--yet our grief is somewhat easier to bear by our just having known you.

Day is Done
Gone the Sun
From the Lakes
From the Hills
From the Sky
All is Well
Peacefully Sleep
God is Nigh..
